JAMAICA ALL STARS ~ STARTING OVER 7" ~ JAPAN CHARITY SONG!

For almost 20 years, the Kingston based June Chan a.k.a. Sister Chin has been an essential bridge between Japan and Jamaica. She has actively created cross-cultural communication between sound systems and artists from the two island countries by providing booking, links, introductions and most important, a generous heart. In addition, her guest houses in Jamaica and Brooklyn have always acted as a headquarters for Japanese reggae fans eager to learn about Jamaican culture. Following the tragic earthquake and tsunami, Jun-Chan reached out to some of her favorite artists to record a song of inspiration and healing. The result is the single "Starting Over" featuring Bunny Wailer, Carl Dawkins, Cocoa Tea, John Holt, Jr Reid, Josey Wales, Half Pint, Ken Booth, Luciano, Marcia Griffith, Tabby Diamond, Yellow Man, U Roy, Triston Palmer and Pinchers. This is a collectors piece (limited to 700) pressed on colored vinyl with all proceeds from its sale going to aid the victims of the earthquake and tsunami.

On Thursday, September 15th Addis Pablo, the son of the late, legendary instrumentalist/producer/label owner Augustus Pablo, will be performing as special guest at Deadly Dragon Sound's DownTown Top Ranking for their Tribute to King Tubby. This special Tribute to King Tubby edition of DTR is part of the first annual Dub Invasion Festival.

Augustus Pablo was one of Jamaica's most revered artists. A master of the melodica (amongst other instruments) Pablo is credited with creating the first all DUB LP (JAVA JAVA JAVA with producer Clive Chin). He was a deeply spiritual rastafari who believed in the power of music to combat an oppressive system. As such, he parlayed his musical successes into the creation of his own labels (Rockers and Message) and record store which became synonymous with serious Roots music. In 1977 he and King Tubby released the LP KING TUBBY MEETS ROCKERS UPTOWN for Bronx based label CLOCKTOWER RECORDS. It is an LP that has found its place as one of the most influential DUB LPs of all time.

Addis Pablo né Swaby grew up in both Kingston, Jamaica and the United States and learned at the foot of his father the importance of both the technical aspects of music and the spiritual resonance that roots music can contain. Over the past few years he has been working with Kingston based One Motion LLC and Triniyard Music developing multiple projects of his own as well as producing for other arists. In addition he has also taken on the mantle of re-developing the Rockers Record Shop in Kingston and working with his father's catalog. Every year, Addis (on Melodica) also joins Chinna Smith and his band for the Annual Celebration of the Life & Works of Augustus Pablo.

For Thursday's DOWNTOWN TOP RANKING - TRIBUTE TO KING TUBBY, Addis will be joining the selectors of Deadly Dragon Sound for an exploration into the vibes of his father's famous collaboration with TUBBYS: KING TUBBY MEETS ROCKERS UPTOWN. With Addis Pablo live on Melodica, the selectors of Deadly Dragon will be pulling some serious vinyl from the vaults as backing tracks, as well as mixing the whole performance in a Dub Wise style.

WKCR’s "Eastern Standard Time" radio program and Sound Liberation Front have joined forces to present the 2011 season of the Coney Island Reggae Beach Party series, bringing the enormously influential culture of Jamaican sound systems back to the Coney Island Boardwalk.

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural season and two events earlier this summer, the free event will feature live DJs playing vinyl records on a large Jamaican-style soundsystem. It will feature special guest emcees and fun activities for the whole family, all in celebration of the Jamaican soundsystem tradition. The event is on the boardwalk at West 19th Street (near the iconic red tower). The party will feature New York's best reggae selectors (deejays) and guest vocalists curated by WKCR host Carter Van Pelt. The September event will include Downbeat the Ruler (Tony Screw), Digital English, Sir Tommy’s, and guests.

EASTERN STANDARD TIME (EST) is the Jamaican music program on WKCR (89.9 FM New York) that airs live every Saturday from 8 a.m to 12 noon. The program, previously known as “Reggae Riddims,” has been on the air for more than 20 years and has an international following.
