Down Town Top Ranking 9/23 / Wax Poetics Reggae Magazine Release Party!

On 9/23 Down Town Top Ranking took a special turn when Deadly Dragon joined up with VP and the great Wax Poetics Magazine in celebrating the release of Wax Poetics annual Reggae Issue with Augustus Pablo on the cover. For the event we were proud to welcome Black Moses Sound featuring the legendary Clive Chin (of Randys / Impact fame) and DJ TWICE.

The night was sweet blend of SERIOUS music, hyped crowd, a whole heap of old friends and some of the most knowledgable reggae heads around.

Here's Carter Van Pelt -- host of WKCR's Eastern Standard Time (89.9 FM Saturdays from 6am to 10am) and all around reggae historian, collector, selector and writer

After big sets of Roots and Rock Steady from Deadly Dragon's Scratch Famous and MR K, Black Moses Sound got on the set and Clive Chin began to play a series of HUGE selections from the great Augustus Pablo. Many of the selections that he drew from came from JAVA JAVA JAVA (universally known as the first DUB LP ever made) and Pablo's debut LP that Clive Chin produced called THIS IS AUGUSTUS PABLO on KAYA. Here's a photo of Clive when he was producing that LP

And here's Clive introducing one of his massive selections.......

Anyone who has come by our shop...or really anyone who knows reggae music will know the photos of David Corio ( http://www.davidcorio.com/ ) . He is one of the great portrait photographers of all time and has photographed nearly every musician of consequence over the last 25 years. Well here is the great photographer facing the lens himself!

For their last set of the night, Clive Chin was selecting deep from the Randy's catalog with a dangerously scorching set of obscure Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese, I couldn't tell!) language Ska and Rock Steady that caused I, the man Scratch Famous, to pull the bloodclaaaaat tunes up for forward after forward!!!!!!

All in all...a huge night night of great music and great vibes. Nuff respect to everyone who passed through!
